{"id":22895,"date":"2016-02-29T05:48:06","date_gmt":"2016-02-29T13:48:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2016\/02\/scientists-discover-that-our-brain-waves-can-be-sent"},"modified":"2017-06-04T20:08:29","modified_gmt":"2017-06-05T03:08:29","slug":"scientists-discover-that-our-brain-waves-can-be-sent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2016\/02\/scientists-discover-that-our-brain-waves-can-be-sent","title":{"rendered":"Scientists discover that our brain waves can be sent by electrical fields"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"blog-photo\" href=\"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog.images\/scientists-discover-that-our-brain-waves-can-be-sent-by-electrical-fields.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Most biology students will be able to tell you that neural signals are sent via mechanisms such as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Neurotransmission\">synaptic transmission<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gap_junction\">gap junctions<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Diffusion\">diffusion<\/a> processes, but a new study suggests there\u2019s another way that our brains transmit information from one place to another.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers in the US have recorded <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Neural_oscillation\">neural spikes<\/a> travelling too slowly in the brain to be explained by conventional signalling mechanisms. In the absence of other plausible explanations, the scientists believe these brain waves are being transmitted by a weak electrical field, and they\u2019ve been able to detect one of these in mice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cResearchers have thought that the brain\u2019s endogenous electrical fields are too weak to propagate wave transmission,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/pub_releases\/2016-01\/cwru-bwm011416.php\">said Dominique Durand<\/a>, a biomedical engineer at Case Western Reserve University. \u201cBut it appears the brain may be using the fields to communicate without synaptic transmissions, gap junctions or diffusion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- Link: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/scientists-discover-new-method-of-brain-wave-transmission-electrical-fields\">http:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/scientists-discover-new-method-o...cal-fields<\/a> --><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Most biology students will be able to tell you that neural signals are sent via mechanisms such as synaptic transmission, gap junctions, and diffusion processes, but a new study suggests there\u2019s another way that our brains transmit information from one place to another.
