A KAIST research team led by Professor Ji-Ho Park of the Department of Bio and Brain Engineering have overcome this limitation by developing a new therapeutic approach that directly converts immune cells inside tumors into anticancer cell therapies.<\/p>\n<p>In their approach, when a drug is injected directly into a tumor, macrophages already present in the body absorb it, produce <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/news\/2024-01-front-line-cancer-warfare-car.html?utm_source=embeddings&utm_medium=related&utm_campaign=internal\" rel=\"related\" target=\"_blank\">CAR<\/a> (a cancer-recognizing device) proteins on their own, and are converted into anticancer immune cells known as \u201cCAR-macrophages.\u201d The paper is <a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/10.1021\/acsnano.5c09138\" target=\"_blank\">published<\/a> in the journal ACS Nano.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/news\/2025-01-bile-acids-impair-liver-cancer.html?utm_source=embeddings&utm_medium=related&utm_campaign=internal\" rel=\"related\" target=\"_blank\">Solid tumors <\/a>\u2014such as gastric, lung, and liver cancers\u2014grow as dense masses, making it difficult for immune cells to infiltrate tumors or maintain their function.
