Her father was a chemist who worked at the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Antonov\" title=\"Antonov\">Antonov<\/a> aircraft factory and her mother was an engineer.<sup id= cite_ref-qf_6-1 class= reference><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maryna_Viazovska#cite_note-qf-6\"> [ 6 ]<\/a> <\/sup> She attended a specialized secondary school for high-achieving students in science and technology, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kyiv_Natural_Science_Lyceum_No._145\" title=\"Kyiv Natural Science Lyceum No. 145\">Kyiv Natural Science Lyceum No. 145<\/a>. An influential teacher there, Andrii Knyazyuk, had previously worked as a professional research mathematician before becoming a secondary school teacher.<sup id= cite_ref-mactutor_7-0 class= reference><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maryna_Viazovska#cite_note-mactutor-7\"> [ 7 ]<\/a> <\/sup> <i>Viazovska<\/i> competed in domestic mathematics Olympiads when she was at high school, placing 13th in a national competition where 12 students were selected to a training camp before a six-member team for the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/International_Mathematical_Olympiad\" title=\"International Mathematical Olympiad\">International Mathematical Olympiad<\/a> was chosen.<sup id= cite_ref-qf_6-2 class= reference><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maryna_Viazovska#cite_note-qf-6\"> [ 6 ]<\/a> <\/sup> As a student at <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Taras_Shevchenko_National_University_of_Kyiv\" title=\"Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv\">Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv<\/a>, she competed at the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/International_Mathematics_Competition_for_University_Students\" title=\"International Mathematics Competition for University Students\">International Mathematics Competition for University Students<\/a> in 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2005, and was one of the first-place winners in 2002 and 2005.<sup id= cite_ref-8 class= reference><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maryna_Viazovska#cite_note-8\"> [ 8 ]<\/a> <\/sup> She co-authored her first research paper in 2005.<sup id= cite_ref-qf_6-3 class= reference><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maryna_Viazovska#cite_note-qf-6\"> [ 6 ]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p><i>Viazovska<\/i> earned a master\u2019s from the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/University_of_Kaiserslautern\" title=\"University of Kaiserslautern\">University of Kaiserslautern<\/a> in 2007, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Candidate_of_Sciences\" title=\"Candidate of Sciences\">PhD<\/a> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Institute_of_Mathematics_of_the_National_Academy_of_Sciences_of_Ukraine\" title=\"Institute of Mathematics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine\">Institute of Mathematics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine<\/a> in 2010,<sup id= cite_ref-VNLU_2-1 class= reference><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maryna_Viazovska#cite_note-VNLU-2\"> [ 2 ]<\/a> <\/sup> and a doctorate (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dr._rer._nat.\" title=\"Dr. rer. nat.\">Dr. rer. nat.<\/a>) from the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/University_of_Bonn\" title=\"University of Bonn\">University of Bonn<\/a> in 2013. Her doctoral dissertation, <i>Modular Functions and Special Cycles<\/i>, concerns <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Analytic_number_theory\" title=\"Analytic number theory\">analytic number theory<\/a> and was supervised by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Don_Zagier\" title=\"Don Zagier\">Don Zagier<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Werner_M%C3%BCller_(mathematician)\" title=\"Werner M\u00fcller (mathematician)\">Werner M\u00fcller<\/a>.<sup id= cite_ref-9 class= reference><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maryna_Viazovska#cite_note-9\"> [ 9 ]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>She was a postdoctoral researcher at the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Berlin_Mathematical_School\" title=\"Berlin Mathematical School\">Berlin Mathematical School<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Humboldt_University_of_Berlin\" title=\"Humboldt University of Berlin\">Humboldt University of Berlin<\/a><sup id= cite_ref-quanta_10-0 class= reference><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maryna_Viazovska#cite_note-quanta-10\"> [ 10 ]<\/a> <\/sup> and a Minerva Distinguished Visitor<sup id= cite_ref-11 class= reference><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maryna_Viazovska#cite_note-11\"> [ 11 ]<\/a> <\/sup> at <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Princeton_University\" title=\"Princeton University\">Princeton University<\/a>. Since January 2018 she has held the Chair of Number Theory as a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Full_professor\" title=\"Full professor\">full professor<\/a> at the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%C3%89cole_Polytechnique_F%C3%A9d%C3%A9rale_de_Lausanne\" title=\"\u00c9cole Polytechnique F\u00e9d\u00e9rale de Lausanne\">\u00c9cole Polytechnique F\u00e9d\u00e9rale de Lausanne<\/a> (EPFL) in Switzerland after a short stint as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Academic_tenure\" title=\"Academic tenure\">tenure-track<\/a> assistant professor.<sup id= cite_ref-:0_4-1 class= reference><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maryna_Viazovska#cite_note-:0-4\"> [ 4 ]<\/a> <\/sup>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Viazovska was born in Kyiv, the oldest of three sisters.
