{"id":226603,"date":"2025-12-06T00:25:21","date_gmt":"2025-12-06T06:25:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2025\/12\/loss-of-brain-protein-eases-alzheimers-symptoms-and-brain-damage-in-mice"},"modified":"2025-12-06T00:25:21","modified_gmt":"2025-12-06T06:25:21","slug":"loss-of-brain-protein-eases-alzheimers-symptoms-and-brain-damage-in-mice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2025\/12\/loss-of-brain-protein-eases-alzheimers-symptoms-and-brain-damage-in-mice","title":{"rendered":"Loss of brain protein eases Alzheimer\u2019s symptoms and brain damage in mice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"aligncenter blog-photo\" href=\"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog.images\/loss-of-brain-protein-eases-alzheimers-symptoms-and-brain-damage-in-mice2.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>New research <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eneuro.org\/lookup\/doi\/10.1523\/ENEURO.0063-25.2025\" target=\"_blank\">published<\/a> in the journal <i>eNeuro<\/i> examined whether eliminating a protein that is elevated in the brains of those with Alzheimer\u2019s could prevent or reduce damage and behavioral symptoms in a mouse model of Alzheimer\u2019s disease.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrevious work from our research team and others found evidence that a specific protein named Centaurin-\u03b11 is involved in the progression of Alzheimer\u2019s damage within neurons,\u201d explained lead author of the study, Dr. Erzsebet Szatmari. \u201cTo confirm the role of this protein and see if it might be a good therapeutic target, we tested whether genetically removing it would prevent or slow disease progression in a mouse model of the disease.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The scientists used a well-characterized model of Alzheimer\u2019s disease in mice. The disease model (called J20) contains two genetic mutations associated with rare familial variants of Alzheimer\u2019s disease.
