The properties of this local wave differ from those generated when epidermal cells are wounded, suggesting that distinct mechanisms are used by plants to communicate specific types of pathogen attack, the team <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/scisignal.adw2270\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> Dec. 2 in Science Signaling.<\/p>\n<p>The new work from Purdue\u2019s Emergent Mechanisms in Biology of Robustness Integration and Organization (EMBRIO) Institute highlights the importance of <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2022-08-intensity-salt-stress.html?utm_source=embeddings&utm_medium=related&utm_campaign=internal\" rel=\"related\">calcium ion signatures<\/a> or patterns in the cytoplasm of cells. Plants and animals use calcium ions to transmit biologically critical sensory information within single cells, across tissues and even between organs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen a bacterium infects plant material, or when a fungus tries to invade plant tissue, cells and tissues recognize the presence of an attacker,\u201d said Christopher Staiger, a professor in the Department of Botany and Plant Pathology and Distinguished Professor of Biological Sciences. \u201cThey recognize both chemical and <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2022-07-crop-biohacking-fungal.html?utm_source=embeddings&utm_medium=related&utm_campaign=internal\" rel=\"related\">mechanical cues<\/a>.
