It also may be more important for<i> <\/i>maintaining cognitive function in later life than previously<i> <\/i>appreciated.<\/p>\n<p>The locus coeruleus is a small, bluish<i> <\/i>part of the brainstem that releases norepinephrine, the<i> <\/i>neurotransmitter responsible for regulating heart rate,<i> <\/i>attention, memory, and cognition.
