{"id":226130,"date":"2025-11-29T04:23:31","date_gmt":"2025-11-29T10:23:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2025\/11\/can-quantum-computers-help-researchers-learn-about-the-inside-of-a-neutron-star"},"modified":"2025-11-29T04:23:31","modified_gmt":"2025-11-29T10:23:31","slug":"can-quantum-computers-help-researchers-learn-about-the-inside-of-a-neutron-star","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2025\/11\/can-quantum-computers-help-researchers-learn-about-the-inside-of-a-neutron-star","title":{"rendered":"Can quantum computers help researchers learn about the inside of a neutron star?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"aligncenter blog-photo\" href=\"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog.images\/can-quantum-computers-help-researchers-learn-about-the-inside-of-a-neutron-star2.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A new paper <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-025-65198-w\" target=\"_blank\">published<\/a> in <i>Nature Communications<\/i> could put scientists on the path to understanding one of the wildest, hottest, and most densely packed places in the universe: a neutron star.<\/p>\n<p>Christine Muschik, a faculty member at the University of Waterloo Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC) and a research associate faculty member at Perimeter Institute is part of a U.S.\u2013Canadian research group using a quantum computer to build on a theory of <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2025-11-universe-visible-mass-generated-explore.html?utm_source=embeddings&utm_medium=related&utm_campaign=internal\" rel=\"related\">quantum chromodynamics<\/a> that describes how different varieties of quarks and gluons (the most fundamental bits of nature) interact in nuclei.<\/p>\n<p>To really understand the behavior of the quark-gluon plasma in extreme conditions like the beginning of the universe, or the inside of a neutron star, scientists need a map, a so-called \u201cphase diagram\u201d to describe the phase transitions in those conditions that are so extreme\u2014so dense and complex\u2014that classical computer simulations of the models will fail.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new paper published in Nature Communications could put scientists on the path to understanding one of the wildest, hottest, and most densely packed places in the universe: a neutron star.
