Researchers at the Department of Energy\u2019s SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory have pioneered a new machine learning method\u2014called X-RAI (X-Ray single particle imaging with Amortized Inference)\u2014that can \u201clook\u201d at millions of X-ray laser-generated images and create a three-dimensional reconstruction of the target particle. The team recently <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41467-025-62226-7\" target=\"_blank\">reported their findings<\/a> in Nature Communications.<\/p>\n<p>X-RAI\u2019s ability to sort through a massive number of images and learn as it goes could unlock limits in data-gathering, allowing researchers to see molecules up close\u2014and perhaps even on the move. \u201cThere is really no limit\u201d to the dataset size it can handle, said SLAC staff scientist Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Poitevin, one of the study\u2019s principal investigators.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Soon, researchers may be able to create movies of their favorite protein or virus better and faster than ever before.
