The lecture was called \u201cIs the end in sight for theoretical physics?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hawking, who later <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/i-was-a-student-of-stephen-hawkings-heres-what-he-taught-me-93508\" target=\"_blank\">became my Ph.D. supervisor<\/a>, predicted that a theory of everything\u2014uniting the clashing branches of general relativity, which describes the universe on large scales, and <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/quantum+mechanics\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">quantum mechanics<\/a>, which rules the microcosmos of atoms and particles\u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.1088\/0031-9112\/32\/1\/024\/pdf\" target=\"_blank\">might be discovered<\/a> by the end of the 20th century.<\/p>\n<p>Forty-five years later, there is still no definitive theory of everything. The main candidate is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.damtp.cam.ac.uk\/user\/tong\/string\/string.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">string theory<\/a>, a framework that describes all forces and particles including <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/topics\/gravity-1420\" target=\"_blank\">gravity<\/a>.
