New research from the University of Virginia School of Medicine <a href=\"https:\/\/alz-journals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/alz.70813\" target=\"_blank\">published<\/a> in Alzheimer\u2019s &amp; Dementia may reveal why that happens and offer hope for prevention.<\/p>\n<p>UVA\u2019s Harald Sontheimer, graduate student Lata Chaunsali and their colleagues found that when protective structures around <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/brain+cells\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">brain cells<\/a> break down, people may lose the ability to recognize loved ones.
