For over a century, camera designers have dreamed of achieving that level of clarity.<\/p>\n<p>In a breakthrough that could transform photography, microscopy, and even <a href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/tags\/smartphone+cameras\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">smartphone cameras<\/a>, researchers at Carnegie Mellon University have developed a new kind of lens that can bring an entire scene into sharp focus at once\u2014no matter how far away or close different parts of the scene are.<\/p>\n<p>The team, consisting of Yingsi Qin, an electrical and <a href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/tags\/computer+engineering\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">computer engineering<\/a> Ph.D. student, Aswin Sankaranarayanan, professor of electrical and computer engineering, and Matthew O\u2019Toole, associate professor of computer science and robotics, recently <a href=\"https:\/\/imaging.cs.cmu.edu\/svaf\/static\/pdfs\/Spatially_Varying_Autofocus.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">presented their findings<\/a> at the <a href=\"https:\/\/iccv.thecvf.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">2025 International Conference on Computer Vision<\/a> and received a Best Paper Honorable Mention recognition.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Imagine snapping a photo where every detail, near and far, is perfectly sharp\u2014from the flower petal right in front of you to the distant trees on the horizon.
