These random interactions between spins make it impossible for all spins to satisfy their preferred alignments; a condition known as \u2018frustration.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers at Stanford University recently realized a new type of spin <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/glass\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">glass<\/a>, namely a driven-dissipative Ising spin glass in a <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/cavity+quantum+electrodynamics\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">cavity quantum electrodynamics<\/a> (QED) <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/experimental+setup\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">experimental setup<\/a>. Their paper, <a href=\"https:\/\/link.aps.org\/doi\/10.1103\/x19r-pzyb\" target=\"_blank\">published<\/a> in <i>Physical Review Letters<\/i>, is the result of over a decade of studies focusing on creating spin glasses with cavity QED.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpin glasses are a general model for <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/complex+systems\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">complex systems<\/a>, and specifically for neural networks\u2014spins serve as neurons connected by their mutually frustrating interactions,\u201d Benjamin Lev, senior author of the paper, told Phys.org.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Spin glasses are physical systems in which the small magnetic moments of particles (i.e., spins) interact with each other in a random way.
