Now scientists at Columbia\u2019s Zuckerman Institute and their colleagues have come up with powerful new software driven by artificial intelligence that can automatically map these dendritic spines in pictures of neurons, a tool the researchers are making freely available.<\/p>\n<p>A paper detailing the work, \u201cA deep learning pipeline for accurate and automated restoration, segmentation, and quantification of <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/dendritic+spines\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">dendritic spines<\/a>,\u201d is <a href=\"https:\/\/linkinghub.elsevier.com\/retrieve\/pii\/S2667237525002152\" target=\"_blank\">published<\/a> in Cell Reports Methods.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDendritic spines are usually the first site that are implicated in <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/neurodegenerative+diseases\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">neurodegenerative diseases<\/a> such as Alzheimer\u2019s and Parkinson\u2019s,\u201d said Sergio Bernal-Garcia, a graduate student in the lab of Franck Polleux, Ph.D., and lead author of the paper. \u201cSo understanding more about them is vitally important.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The neurons in our brain that underlie thought connect to each other using tiny branch-like structures on their surfaces known as dendritic spines.
