Researchers at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) have explored this phenomenon in thin magnetic layers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy utilizing skyrmions, i.e., miniature magnetic vortices, we were able to directly observe, for the first time, the transition of a two-dimensional ordered <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/lattice\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">lattice<\/a> structure into a disordered state at the <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/microscopic+level\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">microscopic level<\/a> in real time,\u201d explained Raphael Gruber, who conducted the research within the working group of Professor Mathias Kl\u00e4ui at the JGU Institute of Physics.<\/p>\n<p>The findings, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41565-025-01977-2\" target=\"_blank\">published<\/a> in <i>Nature Nanotechnology<\/i>, are fundamental to a deeper understanding of melting processes in two dimensions and the behavior of skyrmions, which may revolutionize future data storage technologies.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What occurs during the melting process in two-dimensional systems at the microscopic level?
