One promising solution is quantum cryptography\u2014a quantum technology that uses single photons to establish encryption keys.<\/p>\n<p>A team from the Faculty of Physics at the University of Warsaw has developed and tested in <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/urban+infrastructure\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">urban infrastructure<\/a> a novel system for quantum key distribution (QKD). The system employs so-called high-dimensional encoding. The proposed setup is simpler to build and scale than existing solutions, while being based on a phenomenon known to physicists for nearly two centuries\u2014the Talbot effect. The research results have been published in the journals <a href=\"https:\/\/opg.optica.org\/opticaq\/fulltext.cfm?uri=opticaq-3-4-372&id=575223\" target=\"_blank\"><i><i>Optica<\/i> Quantum<\/i><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/opg.optica.org\/optica\/fulltext.cfm?uri=optica-11-7-926&id=553029\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Optica<\/i><\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.aps.org\/prapplied\/abstract\/10.1103\/PhysRevApplied.23.044011\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Physical Review Applied<\/i><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur research focuses on quantum key distribution (QKD)\u2014a technology that uses single photons to establish a secure cryptographic key between two parties,\u201d says Dr. Micha\u0142 Karpi\u0144ski, head of the Quantum Photonics Laboratory at the Faculty of Physics, University of Warsaw.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the era of instant data exchange and growing risks of cyberattacks, scientists are seeking secure methods of transmitting information.
