Building on their previous work using protein nanowires synthesized from electricity-generating bacteria, the team\u2019s discovery means that we could see immensely efficient computers built on biological principles which could interface directly with living cells.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur brain processes an enormous amount of data,\u201d says Shuai Fu, a graduate student in electrical and <a href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/tags\/computer\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">computer<\/a> engineering at UMass Amherst and lead author of the study <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-025-63640-7\" target=\"_blank\">published<\/a> in <i>Nature Communications<\/i>. \u201cBut its power usage is very, very low, especially compared to the amount of electricity it takes to run a Large Language Model, like ChatGPT.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The human body is over 100 times more electrically efficient than a computer\u2019s electrical circuit. The <a href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/tags\/human+brain\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">human brain<\/a> is composed of billions of neurons, specialized cells that send and receive <a href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/tags\/electrical+impulses\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">electrical impulses<\/a> all over the body.
