A team led by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) and George Washington University has confirmed that atoms in semiconductors will arrange themselves in distinctive localized patterns that change the material\u2019s electronic behavior.<\/p>\n<p>The research, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/science.adu0719\" target=\"_blank\">published<\/a> in <i>Science<\/i>, may provide a foundation for designing specialized semiconductors for quantum-computing and optoelectronic devices for defense technologies.<\/p>\n<p>On the <a href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/tags\/atomic+scale\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">atomic scale<\/a>, semiconductors are crystals made of different elements arranged in repeating <a href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/tags\/lattice+structures\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">lattice structures<\/a>. Many semiconductors are made primarily of one element with a few others added to the mix in small quantities.
