On the other hand, new research suggests that speech-perception difficulty might relate to your cognitive ability.<\/p>\n<p>In a study of three groups\u2014individuals with autism, <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/fetal+alcohol+syndrome\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">fetal alcohol syndrome<\/a> and a \u201cneurotypical\u201d control group\u2014researchers found that cognitive ability was significantly associated with how well the participants, all with typical hearing, processed speech in noisy environments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe relationship between cognitive ability and speech-perception performance transcended diagnostic categories. That finding was consistent across all three groups,\u201d said the study\u2019s lead investigator, Bonnie Lau.
