His device can be produced with a 3D printer and has recently been patented.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a classic case of beginner\u2019s luck. Thomas Berger had just started his Ph.D. in <a href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/tags\/mechanical+engineering\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">mechanical engineering<\/a> at EPFL\u2019s School of Engineering when he made his now-patented discovery, which is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-025-11199-0\" target=\"_blank\">published in <i>Scientific Reports<\/i><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>His thesis built on work he had started as a master\u2019s student, but with the help of a 3D printer.
