Standard approaches such as MRI and PET scans can provide valuable information about brain structure and function, but they are expensive, not always accessible, and often too expensive for repeated use.<\/p>\n<p>A team of researchers in the UK has now demonstrated that a compact, noninvasive technology\u2014broadband <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/near-infrared+spectroscopy\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">near-infrared spectroscopy<\/a> (bNIRS)\u2014may offer a new way to detect brain changes linked to Alzheimer\u2019s disease, even in the early stages.<\/p>\n<p>In this pilot study <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spiedigitallibrary.org\/journals\/journal-of-biomedical-optics\/volume-30\/issue-S2\/S23910\/Mapping-functional-hemodynamic-and-metabolic-responses-to-dementia--a\/10.1117\/1.JBO.30.S2.S23910.full\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> in the <i>Journal of Biomedical Optics<\/i>, scientists used bNIRS to monitor both blood oxygenation and brain metabolism in response to <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/visual+stimulation\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">visual stimulation<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Early and accurate diagnosis of dementia remains a major challenge.
