In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/ncomms13488\" target=\"_blank\">2016 paper<\/a> in <i>Nature Communications<\/i> by lead author M. Asano of Japan, a group of scientists from several countries around the world recognized that for <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/light+pulses\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">light pulses<\/a> that meet certain requirements, the imaginary part of the scattering matrix\u2014more precisely, the real number before \u201ci,\u201d the square root of-1\u2014represented the \u201cfrequency shift\u201d of the transitioning wave due to its passage through the scattering system.
