This view has since shifted dramatically and neurogenesis\u2014the birth of new neurons\u2014is now a widely accepted phenomenon in the adult brain, offering promising avenues for treating many neurological conditions.<\/p>\n<p>One of the main challenges in the field has been identifying neural stem and <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/progenitor+cells\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">progenitor cells<\/a> (NPCs) responsible for generating these new neurons. NPCs are rare, diverse and difficult to isolate from other <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/brain+cells\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">brain cells<\/a> due to overlapping molecular signatures. As a result, understanding their biology\u2014and particularly their role in human brain disorders\u2014has remained elusive.<\/p>\n<p>In a study <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cell.com\/stem-cell-reports\/fulltext\/S2213-6711(25)00210-3\" target=\"_blank\">published<\/a> in <i>Stem Cell Reports<\/i>, a team led by researchers at Baylor College of Medicine and the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute (Duncan NRI) at Texas Children\u2019s Hospital reveals <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/specific+genes\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">specific genes<\/a> that define NPCs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For much of the 20th century it was thought that the adult brain was incapable of regeneration.
