Like many other people, the Carnegie Mellon University Ph.D. student discovered the Netflix series \u201cThe Queen\u2019s Gambit\u201d during the pandemic and began playing online. However, he quickly realized how unnatural it felt playing against chess bots.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter I learned the rules, I was in the bottom 10%, maybe 20% of players online,\u201d said Zhang, who is part of the Language Technologies Institute (LTI) in CMU\u2019s School of Computer Science. \u201cFor beginners, it\u2019s not interesting or instructive to play against chess bots because the moves they make are often bizarre and incomprehensible to humans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Zhang\u2019s frustration <a href=\"https:\/\/lichess.org\/@\/AllieTheChessBot\/all\" target=\"_blank\">led him to develop Allie<\/a>, a chess bot powered by <a href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/tags\/artificial+intelligence\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">artificial intelligence<\/a> that demonstrates the benefits of AI tools that think like humans. He believes training future AI systems to ponder and deliberate on <a href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/tags\/complex+problems\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">complex problems<\/a> could create better agents for use in therapy, education and medicine.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yiming Zhang didn\u2019t grow up playing chess.
