Researchers investigating super small phenomena\u2014from the quantum nature of superconductivity to the mechanics that drive photosynthesis\u2014come to the Department of Energy\u2019s SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory to use the <a href=\"https:\/\/www6.slac.stanford.edu\/topics\/linac-coherent-light-source-lcls\" target=\"_blank\">Linac Coherent Light Source<\/a> (LCLS).<\/p>\n<p>Like a giant microscope, LCLS sends pulses of ultrabright X-rays to a suite of specialized <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/scientific+instruments\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">scientific instruments<\/a>.
