And now, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.darpa.mil\/news-events\/2015-02-08\" target=\"_blank\">DARPA\u2019s saying scientists have found a way<\/a> to do just that\u2014without ripping open patients\u2019 skulls.<\/p>\n<p>In the DARPA-funded study, researchers at the University of Melbourne have developed a device that could help people use their brains to control machines. These machines might include technology that helps patients control physical disabilities or neurological disorders. The results were <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/nbt\/journal\/vaop\/ncurrent\/full\/nbt.3428.html\" target=\"_blank\">published in the journal <em>Nature Biotechnology<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the study, the team inserted a paperclip-sized object into the motor cortexes of sheep. (That\u2019s the part of the brain that oversees voluntary movement.)
