Some researchers suspect that amyloid beta, which is structurally similar to <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/antimicrobial+peptides\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">antimicrobial peptides<\/a>, protects the brain against bacteria, viruses, parasites, and <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/fungal+infections\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">fungal infections<\/a>. Because the <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/blood-brain+barrier\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">blood-brain barrier<\/a> tends to lose its integrity in Alzheimer\u2019s disease patients, the accumulation of amyloid beta might be a signal that pathogens are infiltrating the brain.<\/p>\n<p>In a new study published in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/sciadv.ads5006\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Science Advances<\/i><\/a>, Yale researchers investigated whether infection by SARS-CoV-2\u2014the virus that causes COVID-19\u2014can trigger Alzheimer\u2019s disease-like amyloid beta buildup, leading to neurological impairments like <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/brain+fog\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">brain fog<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new Yale study has found a promising target for treating the brain fog that can follow COVID-19 and offers new insight into a hypothesis about the origin of Alzheimer\u2019s disease.
