It keeps particle physicists up at night and cosmologists glued to their supercomputer simulations. We know it\u2019s real because its mass prevents galaxies from falling apart. But we don\u2019t know what it is.<\/p>\n<p>Dark matter doesn\u2019t like other matter and may prefer its own company. While it doesn\u2019t seem to interact with regular <a href=\"https:\/\/astronomy.swin.edu.au\/cosmos\/b\/Baryonic+Matter\" target=\"_blank\">baryonic matter<\/a>, it could possibly react with itself and self-annihilate. It needs a tightly-packed environment to do that, and that may lead to a way astrophysicists can finally detect it.<\/p>\n<p>New theoretical research outlines how this could happen and states that sub-stellar objects, basically <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/brown+dwarfs\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">brown dwarfs<\/a>, could host the process. The research is titled \u201cDark dwarfs: <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/dark+matter\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">dark matter<\/a>-powered sub-stellar objects awaiting discovery at the <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/galactic+center\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">galactic center<\/a>,\u201d and it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.1088\/1475-7516\/2025\/07\/019\" target=\"_blank\">published<\/a> in the <i>Journal of Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics<\/i>. The lead author is Djuna Croon, a <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/theoretical+physicist\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">theoretical physicist<\/a> and assistant professor in the Institute for Particle Physics Phenomenology in the Department of Physics at Durham University.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dark matter is one of nature\u2019s most confounding mysteries.
