The team of Kenyan, U.S., Austrian, and Swiss scientists found that the trees could draw carbon dioxide (CO<sub>2<\/sub>) from the atmosphere and store it as calcium carbonate \u2018rocks\u2019 in the surrounding soil.<\/p>\n<p>The research was presented at the <a href=\"https:\/\/conf.goldschmidt.info\/goldschmidt\/2025\/meetingapp.cgi\" target=\"_blank\">Goldschmidt conference<\/a> in Prague.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/trees\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">trees <\/a>\u2014native to Kenya\u2014are one of the first fruit trees shown to have this ability, known as the oxalate carbonate pathway.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Some species of fig trees store calcium carbonate in their trunks\u2014essentially turning themselves (partially) into stone, new research has found.
