The technology was developed under DARPA\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.darpa.mil\/program\/re-net-reliable-peripheral-interfaces\">Reliable Neural-Interface Technology (RE-NET) program<\/a>, and offers new potential for safely expanding the use of brain-machine interfaces (BMIs) to treat physical disabilities and neurological disorders.<\/p>\n<p>In an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/nbt\/journal\/vaop\/ncurrent\/full\/nbt.3428.html\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">article published in <em>Nature Biotechnology<\/em><\/a>, researchers in the Vascular Bionics Laboratory at the <a href=\"https:\/\/pursuit.unimelb.edu.au\/\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">University of Melbourne<\/a> led by neurologist Thomas Oxley, M.D., describe proof-of-concept results from a study conducted in sheep that demonstrate high-fidelity measurements taken from the motor cortex\u2014the region of the brain responsible for controlling voluntary movement\u2014using a novel device the size of a small paperclip.<\/p>\n<p>This new device, which Oxley\u2019s team dubbed the \u201cstentrode,\u201d was adapted from off-the-shelf stent technology\u2014a familiar therapeutic tool for clearing and repairing blood vessels\u2014to include an array of electrodes.
