In quantum sensors and <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/memory+systems\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">memory systems<\/a>, atoms often lose their <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/magnetic+orientation\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">magnetic orientation <\/a>\u2014or \u201cspin\u201d\u2014when they collide with each other or the walls of their container.<\/p>\n<p>This phenomenon, known as spin relaxation, severely limits the performance and stability of such devices.
