Consciousness is metaphysically simple \u2014 that is, my thoughts and sense of self can\u2019t be split with a knife like the brain or a material thing can be split. What would it mean to say that I have \u201csplit\u201d consciousness? Instead of Mike, there would be Mike and Joe, which wouldn\u2019t be \u201csplit,\u201d it would just be two people.<\/p>\n<p><em>A category error<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u2018Split consciousness\u2019 is an oxymoron, a category error. Consciousness is not the kind of thing that can be split, and there\u2019s no evidence that one person can ever become two people.
