Scientists say they have managed to develop a robot with \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/actu.epfl.ch\/news\/robotic-fingers-with-a-gentle-touch\/\" target=\"_blank\">a new soft gripper<\/a>\u201d that makes use of a phenomenon known as electroadhesion \u2014 which is essentially the next best thing to giving robots opposable thumbs. According to EPFL scientists, these next-gen grippers can handle fragile objects no matter what their shape \u2014 everything from an egg to a water balloon to a piece of paper is fair game.<\/p>\n<p>This latest advance in robotics, funded by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nccr-robotics.ch\/\" target=\"_blank\">NCCR Robotics<\/a>, may allow machines to take on unprecedented roles. \u201cThis is the first time that electroadhesion and soft robotics have been combined together to grasp objects,\u201d said Jun Shintake, a doctoral student at EPFL.
