The findings highlight a promising new target for early intervention in type 2 diabetes. The study is <a href=\"https:\/\/linkinghub.elsevier.com\/retrieve\/pii\/S0021925825021210\" target=\"_blank\">published<\/a> in the Journal of Biological Chemistry.<\/p>\n<p>While many factors can contribute to type 2 diabetes, lifestyle, especially diet, plays a major role in its onset. Genetics matter, but poor eating habits can greatly increase the risk of developing what is now often called a \u201csilent epidemic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cType 2 diabetes occurs when pancreatic \u03b2-cells, which secrete insulin to regulate <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/blood+glucose\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">blood glucose<\/a>, become impaired due to prolonged stress caused by poor dietary habits, a condition known as <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/oxidative+stress\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">oxidative stress<\/a>,\u201d said Naoki Harada, an associate professor at Osaka Metropolitan University\u2019s Graduate School of Agriculture and lead author of this study.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Researchers from Osaka Metropolitan University have identified a gene that, when activated by metabolic stress, damages pancreatic \u03b2-cells\u2014the cells responsible for insulin production and blood sugar control\u2014pushing them toward dysfunction.
