This could lead to new ways to help slow the progress of these diseases.<\/p>\n<p>An increasing number of people are facing cognitive decline personally or in their loved ones. There are almost <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alzint.org\/about\/dementia-facts-figures\/dementia-statistics\/\">10 million new cases<\/a> of dementia globally each year, and despite decades of research, there are still few treatment options that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/new-discovery-could-explain-why-weve-been-misled-over-the-cause-of-alzheimers\">provide clear benefits<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So due to the links between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/losing-sleep-raises-the-risk-of-alzheimers-thanks-to-this-one-protein\">Alzheimer\u2019s and poor sleep<\/a>, Washington University neurologist Samira Parhizkar and colleagues investigated a central nervous system depressant, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/drugs-supplements\/lemborexant-oral-route\/description\/drg-20487084\">lemborexant<\/a>, that was approved for use as a sleep aid by the FDA <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1007\/s40265-020-01276-1\">in December 2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A drug used to treat insomnia has protected mice against the buildup of the tau protein found to clump abnormally in neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer\u2019s.
