Through carrier multiplication, in which a single absorbed photon generates two electron-hole pairs, called excitons, quantum dots have the unique ability to convert photons more efficiently to energy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur work demonstrates how purely quantum mechanical spin-exchange interactions can be harnessed to enhance the efficiency of photoconversion devices or <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/photochemical+reactions\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">photochemical reactions<\/a>,\u201d says Victor Klimov, the team\u2019s principal investigator at the Lab. \u201cThis not only deepens our fundamental understanding of quantum mechanical phenomena but also introduces a new paradigm for designing advanced materials for energy applications.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In this latest research, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-025-58066-0\" target=\"_blank\">published<\/a> in the journal <i>Nature Communications<\/i>, Los Alamos researchers improved this ability by introducing magnetic manganese impurities into quantum dots.
