Previously available only in low-energy light, lasers are now available in wavelengths from microwaves through X-rays, opening a range of different downstream applications.<\/p>\n<p>In a study <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-025-09105-9\" target=\"_blank\">published<\/a> in <i>Nature<\/i>, an <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/international+collaboration\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">international collaboration<\/a> led by scientists at the University of Wisconsin\u2013Madison has generated the shortest hard X-ray pulses to date through the first demonstration of strong lasing phenomena.<\/p>\n<p>The resulting pulses can lead to several potential applications, from quantum X-ray optics to visualizing <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/electron+motion\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">electron motion<\/a> inside molecules.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Once only a part of science fiction, lasers are now everyday objects used in research, health care and even just for fun.
