{"id":215539,"date":"2025-06-06T17:14:17","date_gmt":"2025-06-06T22:14:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2025\/06\/brain-mechanisms-that-distinguish-imagination-from-reality-discovered"},"modified":"2025-06-06T17:14:17","modified_gmt":"2025-06-06T22:14:17","slug":"brain-mechanisms-that-distinguish-imagination-from-reality-discovered","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2025\/06\/brain-mechanisms-that-distinguish-imagination-from-reality-discovered","title":{"rendered":"Brain mechanisms that distinguish imagination from reality discovered"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"aligncenter blog-photo\" href=\"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog.images\/brain-mechanisms-that-distinguish-imagination-from-reality-discovered.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Areas of the brain that help a person differentiate between what is real and what is imaginary have been uncovered in a new study led by UCL researchers.<\/p>\n<p>The research, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cell.com\/neuron\/fulltext\/S0896-6273(25)00362-9\" target=\"_blank\">published<\/a> in <i>Neuron<\/i>, found that a region in the brain known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/fusiform+gyrus\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">fusiform gyrus <\/a>\u2014located behind one\u2019s temples, on the underside of the brain\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/temporal+lobe\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">temporal lobe <\/a>\u2014is involved in helping the brain to determine whether what we see is from the external world or generated by our imagination.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers hope that their findings will increase understanding of the cognitive processes that go awry when someone has difficulty judging what is real and what is not, such as in schizophrenia, and could eventually lead to advancement in diagnosing and treating these conditions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Areas of the brain that help a person differentiate between what is real and what is imaginary have been uncovered in a new study led by UCL researchers.
