{"id":215464,"date":"2025-06-05T17:09:49","date_gmt":"2025-06-05T22:09:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2025\/06\/wvu-student-discovers-long-awaited-mystery-fungus-sought-by-lsds-inventor"},"modified":"2025-06-05T17:09:49","modified_gmt":"2025-06-05T22:09:49","slug":"wvu-student-discovers-long-awaited-mystery-fungus-sought-by-lsds-inventor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2025\/06\/wvu-student-discovers-long-awaited-mystery-fungus-sought-by-lsds-inventor","title":{"rendered":"WVU student discovers long-awaited mystery fungus sought by LSD\u2019s inventor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"aligncenter blog-photo\" href=\"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog.images\/wvu-student-discovers-long-awaited-mystery-fungus-sought-by-lsds-inventor.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Making a discovery with the potential for innovative applications in pharmaceutical development, a <a href=\"http:\/\/wvu.edu\/\">West Virginia University<\/a> microbiology student has found a long sought-after fungus that produces effects similar to the semisynthetic drug LSD, which is used to treat conditions like depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and addiction.<\/p>\n<p>Corinne Hazel, of Delaware, Ohio, an environmental microbiology major and <a href=\"https:\/\/wvutoday.wvu.edu\/stories\/2025\/04\/22\/three-wvu-students-named-goldwater-scholars\">Goldwater Scholar<\/a>, discovered the new species of fungus growing in morning glory plants and named it Periglandula clandestina.<\/p>\n<p>Hazel made the discovery while working in the lab with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.davis.wvu.edu\/faculty-staff\/directory\/daniel-panaccione\">Daniel Panaccione<\/a>, Davis-Michael Professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wvu.edu\/academics\/programs\/environmental-soil-and-water-sciences-bs\">Plant and Soil Sciences<\/a> at the <a href=\"http:\/\/davis.wvu.edu\/\">WVU Davis College of Agriculture and Natural Resources<\/a>.
