While they can be used for good, (R.I.P., original <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/horse_ebooks\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\">@horse_ebooks<\/a>), bots often power spam, scams and, most interestingly, very volatile clusters of political and cultural discussion on Twitter. Last year, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.darpa.mil\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\">DARPA<\/a> confronted the problem and, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/s\/546256\/how-darpa-took-on-the-twitter-bot-menace-with-one-hand-behind-its-back\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\">MIT<a href='https:\/\/index.co\/company\/mit' data-index='' target='_blank' class='u-indexIcon'><\/a> Tech Review<\/a>, a new report shows just how researchers were able to identify and shutdown the malicious programs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/1601.05140\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\">The report<\/a>, released last month by researchers at University of Maryland and Carnegie Mellon among others, shows the methods used by the teams in a four-week challenge designed to root out those dastardly \u201cinfluence\u201d bots.<\/p>\n<p>Bots <a href=\"http:\/\/qz.com\/248063\/twitter-admits-that-as-many-as-23-million-of-its-active-users-are-actually-bots\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\">make up about 8.5 percent<\/a> of Twitter\u2019s user base, but they can congregate when groups of people discuss controversial topics. The challenge asked participants to figure out which Twitter users taking part in a discussion about vaccines.
