The study, <a href=\"https:\/\/elifesciences.org\/reviewed-preprints\/103620v2\" target=\"_blank\">published<\/a> in the journal <i>eLife<\/i>, could pave the way for future therapeutic developments.<\/p>\n<p>TRIO encodes a diverse group of proteins that control the function and structure of the cytoskeleton\u2014a cell\u2019s internal scaffolding. Rare damaging variants in this gene have been identified in individuals with <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/intellectual+disability\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">intellectual disability<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/autism+spectrum+disorder\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">autism spectrum disorder<\/a>, schizophrenia, and related disorders.
