The new technology could one day enable early and precise disease detection, providing critical insights to guide timely and effective treatment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs opposed to existing prohibitively large endoscopes made of cameras and <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/optical+lenses\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">optical lenses<\/a> or bulky fiber optic bundles, our microimager is very compact,\u201d said research team leader Maysam Chamanzar from Carnegie Mellon University. \u201cMuch thinner than a typical eyelash, our device is ideal for reaching deep regions of the body without causing significant damage to the tissue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the journal <i>Biomedical Optics Express<\/i>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/opg.optica.org\/abstract.cfm?URI=boe-16-6-2376\" target=\"_blank\">researchers showed<\/a> that the microimager, which is only 7 microns thick\u2014a tenth of an eyelash diameter\u2014and about 10 mm long, can be used in a <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/mouse+brain\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">mouse brain<\/a> for structural and functional imaging of brain activity.
