It does this by producing an \u201corganic dishwashing liquid\u201d which it uses to attach itself to oil droplets.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers from the University of Bonn, RWTH Aachen University, Heinrich Heine University Dusseldorf and research center Forschungszentrum Julich have now discovered the mechanism by which this organic liquid is synthesized.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41589-025-01908-1\" target=\"_blank\">Published<\/a> in <i>Nature Chemical Biology<\/i>, the research findings could allow the breeding of more efficient strains of oil-degrading bacteria.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The marine bacterium Alcanivorax borkumensis feeds on oil, multiplying rapidly in the wake of oil spills, and thereby accelerating the elimination of pollution, in many cases.
