Now, University at Buffalo researchers have identified the area in the brain, called the insula, that shows significant changes in people who struggle with speech in noise.<\/p>\n<p>The findings, <a href=\"https:\/\/linkinghub.elsevier.com\/retrieve\/pii\/S0093934X24001263\" target=\"_blank\">published<\/a> in the journal <i>Brain and Language<\/i>, contribute to the growing link between hearing loss and <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/cognitive+impairment\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">cognitive impairment<\/a> leading to <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/dementia\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">dementia<\/a>. Previous research has separately established connections between hearing difficulties and dementia, as well as insula abnormalities and cognitive decline.<\/p>\n<p>The insulae are two complicated structures that interact with the brain\u2019s frontal lobe, which is responsible for higher-level cognitive function.
