In <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Number_theory\" title=\"Number theory\">number theory<\/a>, he proved special cases of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fermat%27s_last_theorem\" class=\"\" title=\"Fermat's last theorem\">Fermat\u2019s last theorem<\/a> and created <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Analytic_number_theory\" title=\"Analytic number theory\">analytic number theory<\/a>. In <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mathematical_analysis\" title=\"Mathematical analysis\">analysis<\/a>, he advanced the theory of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fourier_series\" title=\"Fourier series\">Fourier series<\/a> and was one of the first to give the modern formal definition of a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Function_(mathematics)\" title=\"Function (mathematics)\">function<\/a>.
