It is caused by mutations in the gene that produces CD18, a protein that enables <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/white+blood+cells\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">white blood cells<\/a> to travel from the bloodstream to infection sites.<\/p>\n<p>In the absence of this critical protein, individuals with severe LAD-I\u2014most of whom are diagnosed within their first months of life\u2014are left vulnerable to dangerous, recurrent bacterial and fungal infections.
