Their study sheds new light on the possibility of effectively replacing defective microglia\u2014the brain\u2019s immune cells\u2014marking a potential breakthrough in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer\u2019s and Parkinson\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Microglia are essential for healthy brain function. Defective <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/microglia\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">microglia<\/a> are increasingly linked to the development of neurodegenerative disorders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMicroglia are unique,\u201d says Prof. Movahedi. \u201cThey originate early in <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/embryonic+development\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">embryonic development<\/a> and maintain themselves throughout life without being replaced by new cells from the blood.
