The syn-CH<sub>3<\/sub>CHOO is particularly important among these intermediates, accounting for 25%\u201379% of all CIs depending on the season.<\/p>\n<p>Until now, scientists have believed that syn-CH<sub>3<\/sub>CHOO primarily disappeared through self-decomposition. However, in a study <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41557-025-01798-9\" target=\"_blank\">published<\/a> in <i>Nature Chemistry<\/i>, a team led by Profs. Yang Xueming, Zhang Donghui, Dong Wenrui and Fu Bina from the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics (DICP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has uncovered a surprising new pathway: syn-CH<sub>3<\/sub>CHOO\u2019s reaction with <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/atmospheric+water+vapor\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">atmospheric water vapor<\/a> is approximately 100 times faster than previously predicted by theoretical models.<\/p>\n<p>Using advanced laser techniques, the researchers experimentally measured the reaction rate between syn-CH<sub>3<\/sub>CHOO and water vapor, and discovered the faster reaction time.
