They\u2019re an important material in many industries, including manufacturing, transportation, oil and gas, nuclear power and chemical processing.<\/p>\n<p>However, stainless steels can undergo a process called sensitization when subjected to a certain range of high temperatures\u2014like during welding\u2014and this substantially deteriorates their <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/corrosion\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">corrosion<\/a> resistance. Left unchecked, corrosion can lead to cracking and structural failure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a major problem for stainless steels,\u201d says Kumar Sridharan, a professor of nuclear engineering and engineering physics and materials science and engineering at the University of Wisconsin\u2013Madison. \u201cWhen <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/stainless+steel\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">stainless steel<\/a> gets corroded, components need to be replaced or remediated.
