The benefits of the molecule, known as CPMAC, were found through an international collaboration that included King Abdullah University of <i>Science<\/i> and Technology (KAUST).<\/p>\n<p>CPMAC is an abbreviation for an ionic salt synthesized from buckminsterfullerene, a black solid made of <a href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/tags\/carbon+atoms\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">carbon atoms<\/a> known as C\u2086\u2080. Perovskite <a href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/tags\/solar+cells\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">solar cells<\/a> are typically made with C\u2086\u2080, which has contributed to record energy efficiency. While preferred, C\u2086\u2080 also limits the performance and stability of the solar cells, leading scientists to explore alternative materials.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor over a decade, C\u2086\u2080 has been an integral component in the development of perovskite solar cells. However, <a href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/tags\/weak+interactions\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">weak interactions<\/a> at the perovskite\/C\u2086\u2080 interface lead to mechanical degradation that compromises long-term solar cell stability.
