He was examining a sliver of a new aluminum alloy at the atomic scale, searching for the key to its strength, when he noticed that the atoms were arranged in an extremely unusual pattern.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s when I started to get excited,\u201d said Iams, a materials research engineer, \u201cbecause I thought I might be looking at a <a href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/tags\/quasicrystal\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">quasicrystal<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not only did he find quasicrystals in this <a href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/tags\/aluminum+alloy\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">aluminum alloy<\/a>, but he and his colleagues at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) found that these quasicrystals also make it stronger.
